Joint AUSN-Bangladesh Society of Bioethics Intensive Bioethics Training Course, 15-16 July 2017, IEDCR (Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research), Dhaka, Bangladesh, in collaboration with Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS), Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Bangladesh.
During the inauguration, Professor Taslima Monsoor, Professor and Dean, Department of Law, University of Dhaka; President, Bangladesh Bioethics Society (BBS); and AUSN Visiting Professor of International Law, outlined the importance of bioethics for modern society, and the close relationship of AUSN and BBS.The activities of planning and research of DGHS were introduced by Dr. Ferdousi Haque, Director, Planning & Research, DGHS
Prof. Darryl Macer, President, AUSN talked about what we can do with a Bioethics Degree with an update after the first 50 graduates from AUSN Bioethics and Global Public Health degree programs. There were then papers from alumni on Ethics of Financial Interactions of Pharmaceutical Companies with Students and Medics by Dr. Tonmoy Biswas, MBGPH; Secretary of AUSN Alumni Association; and on Awareness on Ethics of Medical Professionals - Dr. Mahmood-Uz-Jahan Director, Bangladesh Medical Research Council as his MBGPH degree defense. There were AUSN PhD Proposal Defenses on Soul, Death, Barzach and the Hereafter----Islamic Perspectives - Prof. Arif Hossain, Professor, Dept of Human Rights, Etrat University; and Tools for Evaluation of Quality of life and Oral Health Care - Prof. Shahana Dastagir
There were other lectures in the training program by Prof. Darryl Macer on the Linkages of Bioethics, Public Health Ethics and Environmental Ethics; Bioethics and Methodology; Making Choices, Diversity and Bioethics. An additional training lecture was Improving end-of-life care in hospitals: a qualitative analysis of health care providers and bereaved families' experiences and suggestions, Dr. Shahanaz Chowdhury, Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (MBGPH, and currently a AUSN PhD student.
There was a Roundtable on the Role of Ethics Committees in fostering Research by faculty from different universities in Bangladesh who are all AUSN Alumni and Prof Ahmad Neaz, American University of Bangladesh (and AUSN Visiting Professor). Publication ethics was discussed with a lecture on a Core curriculum for publication ethics, Prof. Shamima Lasker, Professor & Head of Anatomy, MH Samorita Medical College. (AUSN Board of Governors and Visiting Professor).
The closing session included lectures by Professors Shamima Lasker, Taslima Monsoor, Darryl Macer, Meerjady Sabrina Flora, Director, Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR), Mohammad Abul Klam Azad, Director General (DG), DGHS; Syed Modasser Ali, FRCS, FRC Opth, Chairman, Bangladesh Medical Research Council, Former Health Advisor of Prime Minister, People’s Republic of Bangladesh, and Prof. Ahmad Neaz, American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) and AUSN Visiting Professor of Social Sciences.
Several recent AUSN graduates received their degrees: Dr. Mahmood-Uz-Jahan (MBGPH); Dr. Md. Anower Hussain Mian (MPH), Md. Robiul Islam (CCP).
